Folding the nappies
Instructions will be given, but just a quick reminder of the basic folds.

Be prepared
As this is a 2 piece system, prepare your nappy in advance of nappy changing. This is simply a matter of folding the cotton pad and wrapping the liner around it. Many liners are large enough to tuck in, helping them to stay in place.
Babies will wriggle – usually because they get bored. Have a colourful or favourite toy at hand as a distraction, but leave it until you need it. If you use it at the beginning they could get bored of it before you have finished the nappy change! Some babies however, just don’t like being on their backs. If this is the case try changing their nappies sitting or standing up – not difficult once you get the hang of it!
Liners
A liner should be used at all times with your real nappy. Once used, remove and flush down the toilet. This reduces staining on the nappies, and helps keep bin smell to a minimum. Washable fleece liners are also an excellent option: as solids tend not to stick, they can be washed with your normal load and they dry quickly too. They are also good at providing a stay dry layer against your baby’s delicate bottom.
Avoiding leaks
The key to avoiding leaks is to ensure the nappy and wrap fit the baby snugly and this is why we have various sizes and brands available to buy. We will advise which size will be best for your baby’s weight. We do have booster pads available too if extra absorbency is needed at any time.
Nappy rash
Ammonia in urine and the bacteria in faeces can cause nappy rash whether you’re using disposable or natural nappies. However, real nappies are made from natural materials (usually cotton or bamboo) and are therefore breathable, so the incidence of nappy rash is far lower than when using disposables. We would advise frequent nappy changes (as soon as they are soiled) to reduce the risk.
Sometimes teething can increase the risk of nappy rash, so be especially vigilant about cleaning and drying the skin at these times.
Always use a liner to help act as a one way barrier to the wetness too. Some paper liners will do this but fleece is brilliant so is especially good for night times. If you already have problems with nappy rash try using a silk liner – these will help nappy rash clear up nice and quickly.
Storing the used nappies
The Nappy Bliss service includes the loan of a lidded bin to store your used nappies in until your next weekly collection.
All nappies (especially disposables containing pooh, waiting in a dustbin to be collected for a week or more) can smell. When using real nappies, we advise that you do not soak them because water activates the bacteria in the urine and that’s what creates the smell. A sprinkle of either lavender or tea tree oil will not only smell nice, but tea tree has antiseptic and anti-fungal benefits too.
Returning your nappies
Please do not over fill the return bags or they’ll get heavy – you have to get them to your doorstep and we have to lift them into our van!! Also, please do not mix soiled and clean nappies in the same bag.
